Creative testing

Updated

Creative testing: Creative testing is running several ad videos against each other on a small budget to find the ones worth scaling.

Creative testing is how a brand finds out which creator video sells before it spends real money. Several videos go live at once with a small, equal budget. After enough impressions the brand compares hook rate, click-through rate and cost per result, kills the losers and moves budget to the winners. Then it does it again, because winners fatigue (Meta).

Commission UGC and creative testing fit together. Per-video pay buys the raw material for a test. Ad spend share then pays the creators whose videos win, in proportion to how hard the brand scales them.

Example. A brand commissions eight videos at $100 each from eight creators, $800 total, and tests each with $150 of spend. Two videos reach a cost per purchase under the brand’s $30 target (Google defines CPA as spend divided by conversions). The brand scales those two to $5,000 a month each. The two creators on a 10 % share of spend earn $500 a month while the videos run; the other six earned their $100. Example numbers, not a benchmark.

When brands use it. The pain this answers: “Our ads are fatigued and we can’t make new creative fast enough.” Any brand running paid social does some version of this. The variables are how many videos per round, how much budget per video, and which metric decides. Hook rate decides fast and cheap; cost per purchase decides slowly and accurately. The volume argument has a number behind it: Lukas Pakter of Trybe says Meta told him “One out of 25 ads on average becomes a winner” (Elevator Talks, 31 Jul 2026). If that holds, the other twenty-four have to be cheap.

The creator’s view. Testing means most videos lose, which is why a base fee matters: it pays for the ones that do not scale. Creators who understand testing make several variations of one video and ask which hooks won, because that information makes the next round better.

On HourlyUGC. Per video pays for each approved video; hourly books hours and each session ends in videos. Either one is the cheap unit a test needs.
