Paid usage

Updated

Paid usage: Paid usage is the right to run a creator's video as an advertisement, priced separately from making the video or earned through a share of the ad spend.

Organic usage lets a brand post a creator’s video on its own accounts. Paid usage lets it put money behind the video as an ad, on the brand’s account or, through whitelisting, on the creator’s. Because an ad can reach far more people than a post, and because the creator’s face is what makes it work, paid usage is priced on its own.

Instagram’s own creator guidance makes the point: allowing a brand to promote a post expands its usage rights, and the creator can negotiate a higher payment for that (Instagram). The legal basis is copyright: the creator owns the video and licenses specific uses (Copyright Office).

Paid usage is priced three ways:

  • Flat fee for a period: a set amount for 30, 90 or 365 days of ads.
  • Share of ad spend: a percentage of what the brand spends on the video, so the usage payment scales with the use.
  • Bundled into a per-video or hourly fee, which is cheap for the brand and usually underpriced for the creator.

Example. A creator charges $150 to make a video and $200 for 90 days of paid usage on Meta. The brand spends $4,000 on it. Under a 10 % share of spend instead, the usage payment would have been $400. Under a 5 % share, $200, the same as the flat fee. Example numbers.

When brands use it. The pain this answers: “Chasing invoices, files and usage rights eats my team.” Any time a creator video becomes an ad. Brands that scale winners prefer a share of spend because it costs nothing on the videos they never run; brands with a fixed media plan prefer a flat fee because it is known in advance.

The creator’s view. Paid usage is the line most often missing from a deal and the one most worth adding. A creator should know whether the brand may run the video as an ad, for how long, on which platforms, and what the brand pays for that, before the file is sent.

On HourlyUGC. Commission on ad spend, 1 to 30 % on Meta, is paid usage priced by the use.
