CPM (cost per 1,000 views)

Updated

CPM (cost per 1,000 views): CPM is the cost per 1,000 impressions or views; in creator deals it also names paying a creator a set amount per 1,000 views of their post.

CPM has two lives. In advertising it is the price of reach. Google describes CPM bidding as paying “per one thousand views (impressions)” of an ad (Google). In creator deals it names a pay model: the brand pays the creator a fixed amount for every 1,000 views the creator’s own post gets, counted on the creator’s account over an agreed window.

The creator version turns reach into the unit of payment. The creator is not paid for filming or for sales; they are paid for the audience that actually watched.

Example. A brand offers $5 per 1,000 views, counted 14 days after posting, with a cap of $600. The video reaches 120,000 views on day 14, which would be $600, so the cap applies and the creator receives $600. A second creator’s video reaches 8,000 views and earns $40. Example numbers.

When brands use it. The pain this answers: “We paid an influencer a flat fee for one post and got nothing.” Brands use a views-based CPM when the goal is awareness and the post stays on the creator’s account, and when they want to pay more to the creators whose audience shows up. The usual terms are the rate, the counting date, what counts as a view, a cap, and a floor if the brand wants to guarantee something. It is often stacked on a small base so creators are not filming for free.

The creator’s view. Views vary from post to post and from week to week, so a CPM deal should not be read as a promise of income. The creator should ask how views are read (a screenshot, platform analytics access, or a tool), when, and whether paid boosts by the brand count.
